What is Ru Kiln (Ru Ware)?
Ru ware is one of the Five Great Kilns of the Song Dynasty, renowned as the finest of them all. It was created exclusively for the imperial court, and surviving pieces are extremely rare.
The most iconic feature of Ru ware is its glaze — a soft, opaque blue-green color often described as "sky after rain". The glaze has a matte, jade-like texture, often with fine crackles. Ru ware is typically thinly potted but feels substantial, with a quiet, understated elegance.
Beige is a rarer variant of Ru glaze, even more scarce than the classic sky-blue.
The fine crackles on the glaze — known as "crazing" or "crackle" — are a defining characteristic of Ru ware, not a flaw. They naturally form during the cooling process and continue to develop over time with use, adding to the unique beauty of each piece.
